Job Description:
Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Develop, implement, and monitor the school’s SEN policy and overall SEND strategy, working with leadership to raise standards.
- Provision & Monitoring: Coordinate provision, mapping out support for students, managing the SEND register, and monitoring progress data to evaluate impact.
- Identification & Assessment: Lead on the identification of SEN and manage the assessment process for students, including referrals for Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Staff Leadership & Development: Lead, train, and support the SEN team (including teaching assistants), providing professional guidance on teaching strategies.
- Liaison & Communication: Act as the primary link with parents/carers, external specialists, and outside agencies to ensure holistic support.
- Transition Management: Oversee the smooth transition of SEND students between key stages and particularly from primary to secondary school.
Qualifications & Experience
- Must be a qualified teacher, often holding a senior leadership position (e.g., Deputy Head).
- Mandatory requirement to obtain the National Professional Qualification for SENCOs within three years of starting the role.
- Significant experience in teaching and special educational needs.
Key Skills
- In-depth knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and relevant legislation (e.g., Equality Act 2010).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with families and professionals.
- Data analysis skills to monitor student progress.
- Leadership ability to drive inclusive practices across the whole school.
