Job Description:
Responsibilities
- Medical Record Review: Analyze inpatient (IP) charts, surgical reports, and physician notes to accurately extract and sequence diagnoses and procedures.
- Code Assignment: Translate clinical information into universally recognized alphanumeric codes (ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS).
- Insurance Validation & Pre-Auth: Verify that the assigned codes match the patient's insurance policy benefits and pre-authorization requirements to prevent claim denials.
- Claim Submission Support: Assist the medical billing team by ensuring the coded data is compliant with payer and regulatory guidelines.
- Dispute Resolution: Help resolve basic coding-related claim rejections and communicate with senior coders or payer representatives when there are missing or mismatched details.
- Compliance & Auditing: Adhere to medical privacy laws (like HIPAA in the US) and internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while reviewing patient records.
Typical Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Pharmacy, or Allied Medicine is heavily preferred.
- Certifications: Recognized medical coding certifications (e.g., CPC, CCS, or CIC from AAPC or AHIMA) are highly advantageous.
- Technical Skills: Familiarity with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, basic medical terminology knowledge, and effective communication skills.
